“Auld Lang Syne” is a song whose melody is based on a traditional tune, and lyrics on a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788. The title may be translated as “days of long ago”. The song is, especially in the English-speaking world, sung at the conclusion of New Year gatherings, but is also widely used at “ending” or “new beginning” activities and happenings, e.g. at the end of a school-year.

“Auld Lang Syne” lyrics

1. Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of auld lang syne?

For days of auld lang syne,
for days of auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.

2. And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.

For days of auld lang syne, my dear,
for days of auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.

3. We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
We’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since days of auld lang syne.

For days of auld lang syne,
for days of auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.

4. We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun to night;
But seas between us broad have roared
since days of auld lang syne.

For days of auld lang syne, my dear,
for days of auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.

5. And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for days of auld lang syne.

For days of auld lang syne, my dear,
for days of auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for days of auld lang syne.
