Children’s song, Canada.
“Alouette” is a francophone children’s song (comptine) first published in 1879 in a song book at Montreal and it is believed that its origin is French-Canadian.
Its lyrics talk about plucking a lark – an act that refers to history rather than to violent intentions: fur traders that were active in North America used canoes and the song helped them to coordinate the motion of paddles.

Teaching idea & activities
1. The song is suitable for the youngest children, to help them learn the different body parts,
like the head, the beak, the neck, the tail and the back.
Move your hands close to those parts while singing, and, at the end, children have to remember them in the correct order.
2. Give to every children an (Orff) instrument and combine every body part with a sound.
If the children are capable of it, define a rhythmic motif (e.g. eight-eight-quarter) at the end of the verse (e.g. “-rai la tête”).
At the end of the song everybody plays on his turn.
