The lyrics and the melody of “Merrily we roll along” are based on the chorus of a folk song called “Goodnight Ladies”.

The composer, Edwin Pearce Christy, lived in the 19th century and the song had been written for a minstrel show. The verse of the original song was “Goodnight, ladies! Goodnight, ladies! Goodnight, ladies! We’re going to leave you now”.
