Did you ever see a lassie?

Did-you-ever-see-a-lassie intro

Children’s song, Scotland.

“Did you ever see a lassie?” is a nursery rhyme which, although first collected in the United States, seems to have Scottish origins, as the words “lassie” and “laddie” mean “girl” and “boy” in Scottish. It is only in the mid-twentieth century that it began to be sung in Great Britain.

The tune of the “Did you ever see a lassie?” is the same as the one of “The More We Get Together” and the German “Oh du lieber Augustin”.

“Did you ever see a lassie?”  Teaching idea and activities

This nursery rhyme can be accompanied by the following singing game:

The children form a circle and a girl (or a boy, depending on the word “lassie” or “laddie”) stands inside. The latter chooses a motion which the others imitate while dancing.

In the end, the single player chooses a boy (or a girl, respectively) from the circle, the song changes from “lassie” to “laddie” (or the other way round), and the dance goes on.

Additionally, you can agree altogether in advance to make a standard movement during the verses “this way and that way”, and then continue with the movement that the one inside the circle had chosen.
