Mary Had a Little Lamb

Mary-had-a-little-lamb-stri

Children’s song, U.S.A.

This song for children tells the true story of Mary Tyler, a young girl whose brother persuaded her to go to school with her little lamb, as she did. The nursery rhyme was first published by the Boston publishing firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon, as an original poem by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830, and was inspired by an actual incident.  It is also famous for being the first thing recorded by Thomas Edison on his newly invented phonograph in 1877, making the rhyme the first instance of recorded verse.

“Mary had a little lamb”  lyrics (English)

1. Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow.

2. And everywhere that Mary went,
Mary went, Mary went,
Everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.

3. It followed her to school one day,
School one day, school one day,
It followed her to school one day,
That was against the rule.

4. It made the children laugh and play,
Laugh and play, laugh and play,
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.

5. And so the teacher turned it out,
Turned it out, turned it out,
And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near.

6. And waited patiently about,
Patiently about, patiently about,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.

7. “Why does the lamb love Mary so?
Mary so? Mary so?
Why does the lamb love Mary so?”
The eager children cry.

8. “Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know,
The lamb, you know, the lamb, you know!
Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know.”
The teacher did reply.

“Mary had a little lamb” Teaching Ideas

This is one of the easiest pieces for the recorder or the glockenspiel, using only three notes: B, A and G.

Additionally you can teach at children how to accompany  the melody at the glockenspiel, xylophone or piano, playing just the consonances G-D and D-A (or C-G and G-D, if the melody is in C major), depending on the chords.
