Mexican Hat Dance (Jarabe Tapatio)

Traditional dance, Mexico.

“Mexican Hat Dance”, known in Mexico as “Jarabe Tapatio”, is a mix of famous Mexican dance forms, fact that perhaps justifies the word jarabe which means a mixture of herbs. Tapatío is the nickname given the people of Guadalajara. Jarabes have been the dance and music symbols of most central and southern Mexican states. Guadalajara music professor Jesús González Rubio (died in 1874) composed a standard melody for it as a symbol of national unity, leading the dance to become the “national dance” of Mexico.

The dance represents the courtship of a man and a woman, with the woman first rejecting the man’s advances, then eventually accepting them, and became internationally famous after Russian dancer Anna Pavlova added it to her permanent repertoire after visiting Mexico in 1919.

The tune of “Mexican Hat Dance” is often performed during celebrations and at dance schools, so we thought of offering you this version of “Mexican Hat dance” for kids.

“Mexican Hat Dance (Jarabe Tapatio)”  – English lyrics by Singing Bell

We clap, we clap, we clap
and take a step forward, then two
We clap, we clap, we clap
Your partner now walks around you

We clap, we clap, we clap
and now take two steps to the back
We clap, we clap, we clap
and put on your Mexican hat

Move your feet and put on your sombrero
Clap your hands like a real caballero
Joy will fly through your heart like an arrow
As we’re dancing this Mexican Dance

Tomorrow we’ll dance on the ceiling
tonight we’ll dance on the floor
And now it’s the right time for dreaming
let’s party like never before
