Un pequeño misterio rodea a los créditos de la escritura de este villancico de Navidad. Por lo general, se atribuye a John Francis Wade (1711 – 1786), un escritor de himnos y copista de música inglés. Sin embargo, hay evidencia escrita de este villancico en latín, que es anterior a la versión de Wade, en una biblioteca en Portugal.
