The melody of this traditional Christmas, yuletide, and New Years’ carol is based on the Welsh carol “Nos Galan”.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used it in a piano and violin duet in the 1700’s.

Teaching ideas
As the tune refers to a dance, we can follow the form AABA΄ and come up with a simple choreography. It could be a dance on a circle, like this:
A- 4 steps to the right, stop and (3 claps – rest ) at “Fa la la…”
B- We hold hands and the human circle closes towards the centre. When the voice pitch goes high, we raise our hands, when it goes down, so do the hands.
Α΄- 4 steps to the left, stop and [(3 claps – rest ) x 2] at “Fa la la…”
