“Baa, Baa, Black Sheep“, just like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star“, is a variant of the French melody “Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman“. This lovely nursery rhyme and its numerous variations have been sung across Great Britain and North America. It is on the number 4439 in the Roud Folk Song Index.

The rhyme is known from the first half of the 18th century. One of the theories about the explanation of its meaning is political and related with the medieval taxes on wool and the slave trade.

Guitar Chords and Tabs in C

‘Baa, Baa, Black Sheep’ is an extremely easy 3-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of C major (and, alternatively, the key of G major as you can see next). To play the tune in C one must be familiarized with the full “barré” technique, as the F Chord is present in every line. The remaining two C and G chords are essential for beginners.

The melody range that results when singing in the key of C is a major 6th from C5 to A5. (See on the Music Sheet in C following). This range is well suited to most children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to C#, D, Eb, or E major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.
