Head Shoulders Knees and Toes - Guitar Chords, Tabs, Sheet Music for Guitar, Printable PDF

“Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” is a children’s song sung to the tune of the traditional folk song “There is a Tavern in the Town”, which first appeared in the 1883 edition of William H. Hill’s Student Songs.

Kids love “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” because they can play with something they know well, the parts of the human body. Throughout this song, the four parts of the human body mentioned are gradually substituted by a sound . That is the sound of a percussion instrument, a clap or the any other body-generated sound.

Guitar Chords and Tabs

“Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” is an easy 3-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of G major, as all three chords G, D and C are essential for beginners.

The melody range is over the octave from G4 to A5 (see on the Music Sheet following), which we find suitable for most children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to G#, A, Bb, or B major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.

Easy Guitar Sheet Music with Chords

This is a simple transcription for guitar with recommended fingering. As much as the song is great for singing with kids, it is also an ideal piece for guitar beginners. It is a pleasant tune to practice the notes on the 1st position and up to the 5th fret with all four fingers of the left hand. There are some interesting slidings of the 4th and the 2nd finger in bars 5 – 6. Try to play the bass notes with their accurate duration by holding your left hand fingers tightly on the frets. Last, but not least, don’t forget the F sharp (1st string,  2nd fret) in bars 6 and 7!

The piece is also a good exercise for the control and flexibility of the right hand thumb (p) which is quite “active” playing quarter notes in the majority of the bars.
