“Golden Slumbers” is a wonderful lullaby written by Thomas Dekker, an English Elizabethan dramatist. The song’s first edition was in 1603, and it is based on the poem “Cradle Song”, a lullaby that it was included in Dekker’s play Patient Grissel.

The Beatles used part of “Golden slumbers” in their song of the same name, although Paul McCartney claimed he composed it without ever having listened to the lullaby.

Guitar Chords and Tabs in C

“Golden Slumbers” is an extremely easy 4-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of C major (and, alternatively, the key of D major as you can see next). To play the tune in C one must be familiarized with the full “barré” technique for the F Chord. The remaining three chords C, G and Dm are essential for beginners.

The melody range that results when singing in the key of C extends to an interval of a tenth from E4 to G5 (see on the Music Sheet in C following). Due to this melodic stretch the song is quite demanding for a voice that isn’t well trained. However it is manageable for most children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to C#, D, D#, or E major by placing it respectively to fret I, II, III, or IV.

This is a simple transcription for guitar with a simple bass line and recommended fingering. As much as the song is great for singing with kids, it is also an ideal piece for guitar beginners.
