“I’m a little teapot” was written in order to teach children a dance routine. Clarence Kelley – who composed the song with George Harold Sanders – and his wife ran a dance school for children. As the movements for the “Waltz Clog” that they wanted to teach were difficult for children to learn, they wrote “I’m a little teapot” with a helpful choreography.

The song was published in 1939. Actually, the dance moves for the song are a pantomime of a teapot’s figure.

Guitar Chords and Tabs

“I’m a Little Teapot ” is an extremely easy 4-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of G major as all four chords G, C D and D7 are essential for beginners.

The melody range that results when singing in the key of G extends to the octave G4 – G5 (see on the Music Sheet following) and is well suited to most children’s voice pitch. Nonetheless, you could use a capo to transpose to G#, A, Bb, or B major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.

Easy Guitar Sheet Music with Notes, Chords & Tablature

This is a simple transcription for guitar with recommended fingering. As much as the song is great for singing with kids, it is also an ideal piece for guitar beginners – actually one can play it within the first week of guitar lessons!
