“Bahay Kubo” is a children’s folk song from Philippines. Bahay Kubo literally means country house, referring to the typical square Philippine huts made of local materials such as nipa palm, leaves and bamboo. The song has its origins in the early American colonial period, when the first American teachers called Thomasites arrived in Philippines to integrate the local people into American culture and were captivated by the country’s traditional architecture.
Parents and teachers can find the song useful to teach young kids about the vegetables of Philippines, as 18 of the indigenous species are named in it.

Ang halaman doon ay sari-sari.
Singkamas at talong, sigarilyas at mani
Sitaw, bataw, patani.
Kundol, patola, upo’t kalabasa
At saka mayroon pang labanos, mustasa,
sibuyas, kamatis, bawang at luya
sa paligid-ligid ay puro linga.
English translation
Nipa hut, even though it’s small,
The plants that grow around it are varied:
Turnip & eggplant, winged bean & peanut,
String bean, hyacinth bean, lima bean.
Wax gourd, sponge gourd, white squash & pumpkin,
And there’s also radish, mustard,
Onion, tomato, garlic & ginger
And all around are sesame seeds.
