“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is widely known by The Tokens, the American vocal group singing in the African-American style called “woo-dop”. In our days it became popular from Disney’s animated film The Lion King. Its composer is the South African musician Solomon Popoli Linda.
Τhe original name of the song was Mbube, which in Zulu -the language in which Linda wrote the song – means “lion”. The first record was released by Linda for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939. The English lyrics were written by George David Weiss. It is in 1960 that The Tokens recorded it under the title “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, which became a No.1 hit in the U.S.A.
Apart from The Tokens many other artists adapted the song, sometimes under the tittle “Wimoweh”. Among them are Yma Sumac, Brian Eno, The Mavericks, Billy Joel & Jimmy Fallon, Passengers, Henri Salavdor, Jimmy Dorsey, Kingston Trio and many others.
