Easy Guitar Chords and Tabs (Israel Kamakawiwoʻole)
Israel Kamakawiwo’ole performed Somewhere over the Rainbow by simplifying the harmonic structure and adding more ornaments and rhythmic motives to the melody. The result is an easy 6-chord song in the key of C major: C, G, Am, F, Em and E7. All the chords are essential for beginners, yet you’ll need to know the full “barré” technique for the F Chord.
The melody range that results when singing in the key of C extends to a 12th from A4 to E5 (see on the Music Sheet following). This range is well suited to male voices, but the A below staff is too low for children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to C#, D, Eb, or E major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.

The original Somewhere Over the Rainbow song has a rich harmonic infrastructure; at the time of its creation, jazz music was dominant in the music and film industry. In order to make the beloved piece more accessible to guitar beginners, we have prepared a simple and easy version with 7 chords in the key of G major. To play the song in G one must be familiarized with the full “barré” technique for the Bm and F# Chords. The remaining chords G, Em, C, Am and D are essential for beginners.
The melody range that results when singing in the key of G extends to an 11th from E4 to A5 (see on the Music Sheet following). This range is well suited to most children’s voice pitch. If you’d like to play the song in the original Ab key you can use a capo on the first fret. Nevertheless, you can also transpose the piece to A, Bb, or B major by placing a capo respectively on fret II, III, or IV.
