“Funga Alafia” is a greeting song from Nigeria in West Africa. Lately, the song has been very popular in school and vocal ensembles throughout the U.S.A. It consists of just three words: “Funga alafia ashe” which are repeated multiple times. Alafia means “good health” or “peace” in the Yoruba language and ashay means “thank you.” The English-speaking performers usually add a verse or two in English; hence the Funga Alafia lyrics can be found in many different versions.
Finally, the word Funga refers to “Fanga“, which is the name of a traditional Liberian dance of hospitality that welcomes visitors to your home. Yet, the movements and gestures included by the singers today are considered to be contemporary American adaptations.
