Old Mother Hubbard Song Information
“Old Mother Hubbard” is one of the most popular nursery rhymes of all times. It was written by Sarah Catherine Martin and first published in 1805 in the book “The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and her Dog“. It has the number of 19334 in the Roud Folk Song Index.
The story of the song was probably based on an earlier poem for children, “Old Dame”. Just like many rhymes from the 19th century, Old mother Hubbard lyrics refer to the poverty in England at the time. The Muffin Man is another example of this kind.
The character of Old Mother Hubbard is related to either St. Hubert, the protector of hunters, mathematicians, opticians and metalworkers, or to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey – just like the Little Boy Blue nursery rhyme.
Today there are many variations to be found, translations in other languages, like Russian, Chinese, Dutch and even parodies of this rhyme.
