“Ave Maria” is one of Schubert’s most popular works. The actual title of the piece is “Ellens dritter Gesang” (“Helen’s third song”), and it is based on a German poem. Each verse begins with the salutation “Ave Maria”, making a reference to the ancient catholic hymn of the same title.
The English translation is by Sir Walter Scott.
Andrea Bocelli, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Barry Manilow and many others have made beautiful recordings of this song.

Lyrics
Ave Maria!
Maiden mild!
Oh, listen to a maiden’s prayer
For thou canst hear amid the wild
This thou, this thou canst save amid, despair
We slumber safely until the morrow
Though we’ve by man outcast reviled
Oh, maiden, see a maiden’s sorrow
Oh, Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!
Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Maria, gratia plena,
Maria, gratia plena,
Ave, Ave, Dominus,
Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris (tui),
Ventris tui, Jesus.
Ave Maria!
The murky cavern’s air so heavy
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled
Oh, maiden, hear a maiden pleading
Oh, Mother, hear a suppliant child
Ave Maria!]
