La Cucaracha Lyrics

“La Cucaracha” is a Spanish folk song that became popular in Mexico between 1910-1920, during the Mexican Revolution. The origins of the song are unknown, but it was created for Victoriano Huerta, a Mexican military officer and 35th President of Mexico, known for the addiction issues he used to have.

The lyrics are improvised according to the use of the song (children, historical or political meaning, etc.), so we thought we might write our own English lyrics, which will make this song, “La Cucaracha”, ideal for a children’s party. Have fun!

“La Cucaracha” (The Cockroach) | Original English Lyrics for children by Singing Bell

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
all she wanted was to dance,
she doesn’t mind that
a leg is missing,
she would never miss the chance.

In the house nobody wants her
and they hunt her through the back door
so she goes after the music
and she’s dancing on the dance floor.

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
all she wanted was to dance,
she doesn’t mind that
a leg is missing,
she would never miss the chance.

She won’t stay where they don’t want her,
there are better things to ask for.
Now the music seems to charm her
as she’s dancing on the dance floor.

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
all she wanted was to dance,
she doesn’t bother
if legs are missing,
she would never miss the chance.

“La Cucaracha” Letra para niños en español

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar
porque no tiene,
porque le faltan
las dos patitas de atrás.

Dicen que la cucaracha
Es un animal pequeño
Y cuando entra en una casa
Se tiene que quedar dueño.

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar
porque no tiene,
porque le faltan
las dos patitas de atrás.

Cuando uno quiere a una
Y esta una no lo quiere,
Es lo mismo que si un calvo
En la calle encuentra un peine

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar
porque no tiene,
porque le faltan
las dos patitas de atrás.

Literal translation of the Spanish lyrics to English:

The cockroach the cockroach,
can no longer walk
because she does not have,
because she is missing
the two back legs (a hind leg).

They say that the cockroach
is a small animal
And when she enters a house
You have to stay master.

The cockroach the cockroach,
can no longer walk
because he does not have,
because he is missing
the two back legs.

When one wants another
And this one does not want him,
It’s as if a bald man
finds a comb in the street

The cockroach the cockroach,
can no longer walk
because he does not have,
because he is missing
the two back legs.

Mexican Revolutionary lyrics

La Cucaracha is very popular in Mexico, and used to be performed especially widely during the Mexican Revolution, (1910 – about 1920), a period of great political upheaval during which the majority of the stanzas known today were written.

Political symbolism was a common theme in these verses, and explicit and implicit references were made to events of the war, major political figures, and the effects of the war on the civilians in general.

Today, few pre-Revolution verses are known, and the most commonly quoted portion of the song is the two stanzas that are against Pancho Villa (a evolutionary general) and President Victoriano Huerta, a notorious drunk who was considered a villain and traitor due to his part in the death of revolutionary President Francisco Madero.

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar
porque no tiene, porque le falta
marijuana que fumar.

Ya murió la cucaracha
ya la llevan a enterrar
entre cuatro zopilotes
y un ratón casa Rodriguez.

English:

The cockroach, the cockroach,
can’t walk anymore
because it doesn’t have, because it’s lacking
marijuana to smoke.

The cockroach just died
they’re just taking her to be buried
among four buzzards
and a mouse at the house of Rodriguez’s.
