Wild Mountain Thyme, also known as Purple Heather and Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go? is a beautiful folk song with Scottish origins. The lyrics and melody are based on the song “The Braes of Balquhither” from the 19th century, written by Robert Tannahill and Robert Archibald Smith. In the 20th century, the Belfast musician Francis McPeake arranged the song into “Wild Mountain Thyme” and first recorded it in the 1950s. The song has since been covered by many artists, like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Ed Sheeran – just to mention a few.

Lyrics
Oh, the summertime is comin’
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin’ heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
Chorus:
And we’ll all go together,
To plug wild mountain thyme,
All around the bloomin’ heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a tower,
By yon clear crystal fountain,
And around it I will place,
All the flowers of the mountain.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
Chorus:
And we’ll all go together,
To plug wild mountain thyme,
All around the bloomin’ heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
If my true love he/she were gone,
I would surely find another,
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin’ heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
Chorus:
And we’ll all go together,
To plug wild mountain thyme,
All around the bloomin’ heather.
Will ye go, lassie, go?
