Traditional, England
“Scarborough Fair” is a love song which takes its name from Scarborough, a seaside town in Yorkshire. The city’s fair market has been famous since the Middle Ages. The lyrics speak of a series of impossible orders that a young man asks for from his old love. If the girl makes it, then she will really be his favorite. The phrase is repeated in the chorus “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme“. The melody is not written on a major or minor key, but has the special sound of the Dorian mode, common in medieval music.
The song was made popular thanks to a cover by Simon & Garfunkel.
