“Autumn Leaves” is the English version of the French song “Les Feuilles mortes”. The music was composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945. Jacques Prévert wrote the original French lyrics and Johnny Mercer wrote the English version in 1950. The song has been met with international success in every one of its versions ever since, both as a vocal and as an instrumental piece. Steve Conway, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton, Eva Cassidy are some of the numerous singers that have given successful performances of the song.

Although it has been covered in many different styles, it is basically a jazz standard. In 1955, the pianist Roger Williams recorded his instrumental version that skyrocketed to the number one position in the US Billboard charts of the same year. Countless other jazz musicians have made memorable recordings, like Stan Getz, Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal, Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis, Vince Guaraldi, and John Coltrane.

According to the jazz historian Philippe Baudoin, Autumn Leaves is “the most important non-American standard”. He also noted that “it has been recorded about 1400 times by mainstream and modern jazz musicians alone and is the eighth most-recorded tune by jazzmen.”

Autumn Leaves Lyrics

The falling leaves, drift by my window
The autumn leaves, of red and gold.

I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands, I used to hold.

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song.

But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song.

But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Yes, I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
