If you’ve been looking for Red is the Rose lyrics, especially if you’d like to print them out, then you’re on the right page!

“Red is the Rose” is a beautiful traditional Irish ballad. The origins are unclear, yet its melody is based upon the famous Scottish song “Loch Lomond,” The lyrics tell the sad story of two lovers that have to be separated, even though they have promised eternal love and devotion to each other. Misfortunes like this were common in Ireland throughout the 19th and the early 20th century, as millions of Irish people migrated to the US and other countries all over the world.

Since 1978, that Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy released it in their album Two For The Early Dew, the song has become an international favourite. In the recent years, many other artists have also performed it successfully, like The High Kings, Orla Fallon and Nanci Griffith with The Chieftains – just to name a few.

On this page you’ll find the lyrics and a printable PDF file with lyrics for free download. You can also watch a sing-along video by The High Kings. We are sure that you’ll enjoy the song to the fullest!

Red is the Rose Lyrics

Come over the hills, my bonny Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the road, love, and I’ll make the vow
And I’ll be your true love forever.

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.

‘Twas down by Killarney’s green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she’d be my love forever.

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.

It’s not for the parting that my sister pains
It’s not for the grief of my mother
Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.
