Bella Ciao Lyrics

Partisan version

Lyrics in Italian

Una mattina mi son svegliato
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Una mattina mi son svegliato
Eo ho trovato l’invasor

O partigiano porta mi via
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
O partigiano porta mi via
Che mi sento di morir

E se io muoio da partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E se io muoio da partigiano
Tu mi devi seppellir

Mi seppellire lassù in montagna
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Mi seppellire lassù in montagna
Sotto l’ombra di un bel fiore

E le genti che passeranno
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E le genti che passeranno
Mi diranno: “Che bel fior”

È questo il fiore del partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
È questo il fiore del partigiano
Morto per la libertà

English Translation

One morning I woke up
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
One morning I woke up
And I found the invader

O partisan take me away
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
O partisan take me away
That I feel like I’m going to die

And if I die as a partisan
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
And if I die as a partisan
You must bury me

Bury me up there in the mountains
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
Bury me up there in the mountains
Under the shade of a beautiful flower

And the people who will pass
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
And the people who will pass
They will tell me: “What a beautiful flower”

This is the flower of the partisan
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
This is the flower of the partisan
Who died for freedom

Lyrics in Italian

Alla mattina appena alzata
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao, ciao, ciao
alla mattina appena alzata
in risaia mi tocca andar.

E fra gli insetti e le zanzare
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
e fra gli insetti e le zanzare
un dur lavoro mi tocca far.

Il capo in piedi col suo bastone
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
il capo in piedi col suo bastone
e noi curve a lavorar.

Il capo in piedi col suo bastone
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
il capo in piedi col suo bastone
e noi curve a lavorar.

O mamma mia o che tormento
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
o mamma mia o che tormento
io t’invoco ogni doman.

Ed ogni ora che qui passiamo
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
ed ogni ora che qui passiamo
noi perdiam la gioventù.

Ma verrà un giorno che tutte quante
o bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao
ma verrà un giorno che tutte quante
lavoreremo in libertà.

Ma verrà un giorno che tutte quante
lavoreremo in libertà.
Ma verrà un giorno che tutte quante
lavoreremo in libertà.

English Translation

As soon as the morning comes
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
As soon as the morning comes
I have to go to the rice field.

And among insects and mosquitoes
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
and among insects and mosquitoes
a hard work I have to do.

The boss standing with his cane
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
the head standing with his staff
and we work with our backs bent.

The boss standing with his cane
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
the head standing with his staff
and we work with our backs bent.

Oh my dear mother, oh what a torment
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
Oh my dear mother, oh what a torment
I beseech you every coming day.

And every hour we spend here
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
and every hour we spend here
we lose our youth.

But there will come a day that all of us
Goodbye, beautiful! Bye, bye, bye
but there will come a day that all of us
we will work in freedom.

but there will come a day that all of us
we will work in freedom.
but there will come a day that all of us
we will work in freedom.

Bella Ciao Lyrics Meaning

“Bella Ciao” which means “Goodbye beautiful”, is a popular Italian folk song dating from the 19th century. Back then, it was known as “Alla mattina appena alzata” and was sung by the Mondina women workers of northern Italy. Their arduous job was to “mondare”, that is to weed the rice fields during the the first stages of their development. In doing so, they had to spend their workdays with bare feet in water up to their knees and their backs bent for many hours. The dreadful working conditions, long hours and very low wages led to constant discontent that was often expressed through insurgences and riots.

Bella Ciao Song Information

In 1953 the songs appears published in its partisan version; from then on, the theory has prevailed that “Bella Ciao” is a song of the anti-fascist resistance sung by the Partisans . However, there is not enough historic evidence of that, and the case remains debatable. No matter what, the song has since been adopted worldwide as a hymn of freedom. It has been translated in almost every existing language and has been also covered countless times.

Worthy of note is the renewed interest in the song due to its appearance in the Spanish television series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) from 2017. What is more, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the beloved song became a symbol of solidarity to the Italian people that suffered the most in the first stages of the virus’ outbreak.
