Funiculì, Funiculà Printable Lyrics – PDF

by Luigi Denza & Peppino Turco

“Funiculì, Funiculà” is a popular Italian song by Luigi Denza & Peppino Turco, who wrote it in 1880 for the opening of the first funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. The merry Neapolitan tune sings of a young man who compares his sweetheart to a volcano and invites her to join him on a romantic walk up to the summit. Up to this day, the song has been performed by many artists, including Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, and Mario Lanza – just to name a few.

On this page you can find the Italian lyrics with an English translation and the lyrics of the English version by Edward Oxenford, a lyricist and translator of librettos. His version of ‘Funiculi, Funicula’ often appears with the title “A Merry Life”. You can download for free a printable lyrics PDF file, and you can also watch two sing-along videos of the song in Italian and English language. Listen, sing along and enjoy the beautiful song!

Lyrics in Italian

Aissera, oje Nanniné, me ne sagliette,
tu saje addó, tu saje addó
Addó ‘stu core ‘ngrato cchiù dispietto
farme nun pò! Farme nun pò!
Addó lu fuoco coce, ma se fuje
te lassa sta! Te lassa sta!
E nun te corre appriesso, nun te struje
sulo a guardà, sulo a guardà.

Io veco a tte! Io veco a tte!
Tirato co la fune, ditto ‘nfatto,
‘ncielo se va, ‘ncielo se va.
Se va comm’ ‘a lu viento a l’intrasatto,
guè, saglie, sà! Guè, saglie, sà!

Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,

Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,

funiculì, funiculà, funiculì, funiculà,

‘ncoppa, jamme jà, funiculì, funiculà!

Se n’è sagliuta, oje né, se n’è sagliuta,
la capa già! La capa già!
È gghiuta, po’ è turnata, po’ è venuta,
sta sempe ccà! Sta sempe ccà!
La capa vota, vota, attuorno, attuorno,
attuorno a tte! Attuorno a tte!
Stu core canta sempe nu taluorno:
Sposamme, oje né! Sposamme, oje né!

Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,

Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,

funiculì, funiculà, funiculì, funiculà,

‘ncoppa, jamme jà, funiculì, funiculà!

English translation

Yesterday evening, Anna, I went up,
Do you know where?
Where this ungrateful heart cannot spite me any more!
Where the fire burns, but if you flee
It lets you be!
And it doesn’t chase you, it doesn’t burn you, to see the sky!
Let’s go up to the top, let’s go,
Funicular up, funicular down!

Let’s go from the earth to the mountaintop!
Without walking!
We can see France, Procida and Spain…
and I can see you!
Pulled by a rope, no sooner said than done,
We’ll go to heaven…
It goes like the wind suddenly,
Up, up, up!
Let’s go up to the top, let’s go,
Funicular up, funicular down!

We’ve climbed it, my love, we’ve already climbed
To the top!
It’s gone up, then returned, then it’s back…
It’s always here!
The summit revolves, around, around,
around you!
This heart always sings, my love,
Let’s get married one day!
Let’s go up to the top, let’s go,
Funicular up, funicular down!

Lyrics in English

by Edward Oxenford

Some think the world is made for fun and frolic,
And so do I! And so do I!
Some think it well to be all melancholic,
To pine and sigh; to pine and sigh;
But I, I love to spend my time in singing,
Some joyous song, some joyous song,
To set the air with music bravely ringing
Is far from wrong! Is far from wrong!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Echoes sound afar! Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!

Some sing the world is set for freedom dancing,
But not so I! And not so I!
Some sing our eyes could keep from finally glancing,
Upon the sly! But not so I!
But all we’re so amazing and so charming!
Divinely sweet! Divinely sweet!
And shortly, there’s no time for pace and harming,
In nimble feet! In nimble feet!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Echoes sound afar! Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!

Ah me! ’tis strange that some should take to sighing,
And like it well! And like it well!
For me, I have not thought it’s worth the trying,
So cannot tell! So cannot tell!
With laugh, with dance and song the day soon passes
Full soon is gone, full soon is gone,
For mirth was made for joyous lads and lassies
To call their own! To call their own!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Listen, listen, echoes sound afar!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
Echoes sound afar! Tra-la-la-la! Tra-la-la-la!
