In 1907, the American author Henry van Dyke wrote “The Hymn of Joy” or “Joyful, Joyful we adore thee”, set to Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy”. The well known melody is the main theme of the fourth and final movement in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Since then it is heard in many churches across America. It is one of the best-known congregational hymns in the English language.
