“Rise and Shine“, also known as “Children of the Lord” or “The Arky, Arky Song”, is a traditional gospel song from the 19th century. The lyrics are inspired by the verse in the Book of Isaiah 60:1 which states: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” in reference to Zion.
The song is a narration of the story of the Flood and Noah’s Ark from the Bible. Due to its humorous style and beautiful tune, it has become a kids’ favorite. It is commonly sung at various Sunday schools, scout camps and camps for Christian and Jewish children. Notable folk artists such as Pete Seeger have covered the song.
