My Mother Told Me Lyrics

My mother told me
Someday I will buy
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My mother told me
Someday I will buy
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My mother told me
Someday I will buy (buy)
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
(Steady) steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My mother told me
Someday I will buy (buy)
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble baroque I steer
(Steady) steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My Mother Told Me Old Norse Lyrics

Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
fley ok fagrar árar,
Fara á brott með víkingum,
standa upp í stafni,
stýra dýrum knerri,
halda svá til hafnar
hǫggva mann ok annan,
hǫggva mann ok annan.

My Mother Told Me Song Information

“My Mother Told Me” (or “Þat mælti mín móðir” in old Norse) is an old Viking song originating from the Egil’s saga of the 13th century that is about the adventures of Egill Skallagrimsson. It depicts a period in history when the Vikings started to venture abroad to “distant shores” due to the economic, political, and social pressures they had to deal with in their homeland.

It is usually sung when travelling but is can often be heard when people are drinking. In the last decade there is a renewed interest in the song as a modern cover of it is featured in the 2013 TV series Viking.

Egill Skallagrimsson was a cruel Viking warrior of the 10th century and one of the greatest Icelandic poets as well; he ended his life as a vulnerable blind old man, heartbroken and devastated to the loss of both his sons.

According to the legend, Egill wrote the poem Það mælti mín móðir (My Mother Told Me) when he was still 7 or 8 years old on the night after he killed his first man; others attribute it to Snorri Sturluson who was a descendant of Egil’s and a poet as well.
