Oh Happy Day Lyrics

Lyrics (Hawkins’ Gospel)

Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
He washed my sins away (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)

He taught me how to watch, fight and pray, fight and pray
And live rejoicing every, everyday

Oh happy day

He taught me how

Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)

Lyrics (Doddridge’s Hymn)

  1. O happy day, that fixed my choice
    On Thee, my Savior and my God!
    Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
    And tell its raptures all abroad.

Chorus:

Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away!
He taught me how to watch and pray,
And live rejoicing every day:

Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away!

  1. O happy bond, that seals my vows
    To Him Who merits all my love!
    Let cheerful anthems fill His house,
    While to that sacred shrine I move.
  1. ’Tis done, the great transaction’s done!—
    I am the Lord’s and He is mine;
    He drew me and I followed on;
    Charmed to confess the voice divine.
  1. Now rest, my long-divided heart,
    Fixed on this blissful center, rest;
    Here have I found a nobler part;
    Here heav’nly pleasures fill my breast.
  1. High heav’n, that heard the solemn vow,
    That vow renewed shall daily hear,
    Till in life’s latest hour I bow
    And bless in death a bond so dear.

Oh Happy Day Song Information

“Oh Happy Day” is a popular gospel from 1967 by Edwin Hawkins. It is based on an old hymn of the same title that was written in 1755 by Clergyman Philip Doddridge and was a popular hymn for baptisms.

Hawkins served at the time as a pianist at the Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, California. He made the gospel music arrangement of the hymn for the church choir. Hence the first recording took place in the church with the church choir and musicians. Although they released just five hundred copies of the album, the song was soon discovered by DJ Abe “Voco” Kesh at KSAN-FM in San Francisco, who put it in rotation. Oh Happy Day became an international hit in 1969; it has been a gospel music standard ever since, covered by many artists, like Glen Campbell, The Statler Brothers, Etta James and Bobby Womack. It is also featured in the 1993 movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
