Lyrics

1. The itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the spout again
2. The itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the big tall tree
Down came the snow and made the spider freeze
Out came the sun and melted all the snow
So the itsy-bitsy spider had another go
3. The itsy-bitsy spider climbed in the bubble bath
Then came rubber duckie and made the spider laugh
Down came the water and washed him down the drain
So the itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the spout again
4. The itsy-bitsy spider climbed up without a stop
She spun a silky web right at the very top
She wove and she spun and when her web was done
The itsy-bitsy spider she rested in the sun

Teaching idea & activities
“Itsy-Bitsy Spider” is a finger-play where the hands accompany through a sequence of gestures that mimic the words of the song. This makes it a wonderful tool for developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in young children.
Teaching Idea: Sequence & Prediction
After children have learned the song, pause before each verse and ask them what comes next. This builds narrative sequencing skills and encourages active listening.
You can also introduce simple weather vocabulary — rain, sun, clouds — by connecting the lyrics to real-world observations. On a rainy day, for instance, invite kids to look out the window and recall what happens to the spider.
Activity: Make Your Own Spider
Have each child craft a simple spider using a small paper cup (the body) and four pipe cleaners bent through holes on each side (the legs).
Once their spider is ready, children can “walk” it up a piece of blue cardstock (the waterspout) while singing the song — acting out the story with their own creation.
This combines the finger-play with a hands-on art project, making the song tangible and memorable.
