The glockenspiel or the xylophone is one of the first musical instruments children can use to take their first steps in playing music. Two mallets, like magic wands, gently touch the metal or wooden bars, and even with 3-4 notes you can play a famous kids’ song like Hot Cross Buns or Mary Had a Little Lamb.
In the following list we sorted the easiest songs – according to range and rhythm – first.

The Xylophone and the Glockenspiel – 2 easy instruments
These are two musical instruments that don’t need tuning, nor any special skills. Of course, the way one holds and handles the mallets affects the sound produced. With a basic technique, however, that one can easily imitate and learn, the result is quite satisfactory.
Another point when it comes to a small repertoire, is the sheet music: since these music sheets are intended primarily for beginners or amateurs, they come with a colored glockenspiel / xylophone chart, so it is clearer which bars will be used for the song. You will notice that there is a color match between the design and the stave. Finally, besides its color, each note on the staff has its corresponding name.
With a glockenspiel, two mallets, and a good mood, you now have a rich enough repertoire to get you started. You can’t get lost along the way!
Xylophone Notes Chart
Reading a xylophone notes chart is a great way to learn how to play the xylophone. The chart typically shows which note is played with each key of the instrument. Each key corresponds to either a white or black rectangle on the board and can be identified by its number, letter name or pitch (C, D, E, F, G, A, B).
To read the chart, locate the note (or combination of notes) that you want to play. Then, look for the corresponding key on the instrument and hit the key with the mallet in order to sound the note. Some xylophone charts also may include an indication of which hand to use when playing each note.
