Looking for Mary Mary Quite Contrary lyrics, especially if you’d like to print them out? You’re on the right page!
“Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary” is an old English nursery rhyme. It first appeared in Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book from 1774 with these lyrics:
Mistress Mary, Quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With Silver Bells, And Cockle Shells,
And so my garden grows.
The meaning of this ditty is debatable; some say that Mary is Jesus’ mother and the rhyme is about the spread of Catholicism. Others claim that Mary is either Mary I of England (Mary Tudor) or Mary, Queen of Scots (Mary Stuart), even though they both lived some 200 years before the time that this rhyme was popular.
