Folk song, Scotland
“The Bluebells of Scotland” is a Scottish folk song of love and homeland, rooted in the early 19th century, that continues to enchant with its graceful melody and heartfelt lyrics.
In the lilting melody of Scotland’s rolling hills and blooming wildflowers, the song we also know as “Blue Bells of Scotland” gently carries the listener away to a place of longing and beauty. It invites us to ask simple questions, all set against the delicate fragrance of the bluebells that carpet many a glen.
Whether sung in simple folk form or rendered as a grand musical arrangement, it retains a purity of expression and a musical charm that continues to captivate.

The Bluebells of Scotland Lyrics

1.
Oh where, tell me where, is your Highland laddie gone?
Oh where, tell me where, is your Highland laddie gone?
He’s gone with streaming banners where noble deeds are done
and it’s, oh, in my heart I wish him safe at home.
2.
Oh where, tell me where, does your Highland laddie dwell?
Oh where, tell me where, does your Highland laddie dwell?
He dwells in Bonnie Scotland, where blooms the sweet blue bell
and it’s, oh, in my heart I loved my laddie well.
3.
Oh what, tell me what, does your Highland laddie wear?
Oh what, tell me what, does your Highland laddie wear?
A bonnet with a lofty plume, and on his breast a plaid
And it’s oh, in my heart I loved my Highland lad.

Song Info
The song commonly titled The Bluebells of Scotland is listed in folksong indexes as Roud 13849 and is generally attributed to Dorothea Jordan (also known as Dora Jordan), an English-Irish actress and writer, with publication around 1801.
The lyrics ask, “Oh where, tell me where is your Highland laddie gone? … He dwelt in bonnie Scotland where blooms the sweet bluebell.”
While the precise origins of the melody are unclear — some scholars suggest it draws on older English or Scottish airs — Jordan is credited with popularising the version that endured.
Over the 19th century the tune was adapted into many instrumental arrangements — notably by Arthur Pryor for trombone and band around 1899 — thereby extending its reach far beyond the folk-song realm.
