“The First Noel” is a traditional English carol with Cornish origins, most likely from the 18th century. According to some sources, its origins are even earlier, from the 13th or 14th century. Davies Gilbert was the first to publish this carol in his book Some Ancient Christmas Carols in 1823. The melody is an arrangement by the British composer John Stainer, who first published it in 1871.
The song title is also written as “The First Noël” and “The First Nowell”. It is listed as number 682 in the Roud Folk Song Index.
