Ich geh mit meiner Laterne

Children’s Song, Germany.

“Ich geh mit meiner Laterne” is the most popular song for “Martinisingen“, an old Protestant custom of Germany which takes place on the 10th of November, the eve of St. Martin’s day.

St. Martin was known as a friend of children and patron of the poor, and this month is a passing from autumn to winter, and traditionally the period when poor people need food and support.

The song is sung by children carrying lanterns, at the end of the day, especially in the evening, while they ask for cakes or other goodies as treats.

Lyrics

1. Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Da oben leuchten die Sterne
und unten da leuchten wir.
Der Hahn, der kräht, die Katz miaut,
rabimmel, rabammel, rabumm (x2)

2. Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Da oben leuchten die Sterne
und unten da leuchten wir.
Ein Lichtermeer zu Martins Ehr
rabimmel, rabammel, rabumm (x2)

3. Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Da oben leuchten die Sterne
und unten da leuchten wir.
Der Martinsmann, der zieht voran
rabimmel, rabammel, rabumm (x2)

4. Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Da oben leuchten die Sterne
und unten da leuchten wir.
Wie schön das klingt, wenn jeder singt
rabimmel, rabammel, rabumm (x2)

5. Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Da oben leuchten die Sterne
und unten da leuchten wir.
Ein Kuchenduft liegt in der Luft

Da oben leuchten die Sterne

Beschenkt uns heut, ihr lieben Leut
