“Brahms’ Lullaby” is a lullaby composed by Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) and was a gift to Bertha Faber, a composer’s friend and lover, on the occasion of the birth of her second son.

Guitar Chords and Tabs in C

‘Brahms’ Lullaby’ is an easy 4-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of C major or that of G major, as you will see further down this post. The choice is yours, depending on your skill level and the preferred pitch. To play the tune in C one must be familiarized with the full “barré” technique, as the F Chord is present throughout the piece. The remaining C, G and G7 chords are essential for beginners.

The melody range is a full octave from C4 to C5 (see on the Music Sheet in C following), which we find a bit compelling for most children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to C#, D, Eb, or E major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.

In case you have any difficulty with the Barré technique, or if you would like an easier option for your younger students, we suggest the key of G major, as all four chords G, D, C and D7 are essential for beginners. Accordingly, the melody range extends to the octave of G4 – G5 which is more suitable for kids singing (see on the Music Sheet in G following). As mentioned before, you could always use a capo to transpose to G#, A, Bb, or B major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.

Easy Guitar Sheet Music with Chords in C

This is a simple transcription for guitar with recommended fingering. As much as the song is great for singing with kids, it is also an ideal piece for guitar beginners. It is a pleasant tune to practice the notes on the 1^st position and up to the 3^rd fret, while practising with 3 fingers of the left hand on four strings from B (2nd) to A (5th). It is also a good exercise for the flexibility of the right hand if played “apoyando” i-m with the fingers scrolling up and down the strings.
