“Did you ever see a lassie?” is a nursery rhyme which, although first collected in the United States, seems to have Scottish origins, as the words “lassie” and “laddie” mean “girl” and “boy” in Scottish. It is only in the mid-twentieth century that it began to be sung in Great Britain.

The tune of the “Did you ever see a lassie?” is the same as the one of “The More We Get Together” and the German “Oh du lieber Augustin”. Today it’s often used as a love song for kids.

‘Did You Ever See a Lassie?’ is an extremely easy 2-chord song in a major key. We suggest the key of C major, as both C and G chords are essential for beginners.

Besides that, the melody range that results when singing in the key of C is a ninth from G4 to A5 (see on the Music Sheet following). This range is well suited to most children’s voice pitch. Nevertheless, you could use a capo to transpose to C#, D, Eb, or E major by placing it respectively on fret I, II, III, or IV.
