Children’s song, Morocco.
“A Ram Sam Sam” is a children’s song from Morocco and a singing game, as well. Older children can sing the “A Ram Sam Sam” as a round. It can be also sung as a name or hello song by substituting the word “a rafig” in the second verse with a greeting to a friend.
The Liverpool folk group The Spinners released a version of this rhyme, and claimed to have learned the song from an Israeli singer and that the words were in Aramaic, saying “Get up on your horse and gallop away”.

Teaching idea & activities
Sing the song as a name song by replacing the word “a rafiq” with a greeting for a child as proposed above at the Lyrics section.
Sing as many names as you can!
“A Ram Sam Sam” can be used in teaching the note values of music to kids. There is a distinctive rhythmic pattern where a sequence of quarter notes is followed by a sequence of eighth notes, namely during the words “Guli guli guli guli guli”. While singing, you can combine the two patterns with certain movements or steps, in order to enhance your kids’ perception and physical expression of these rhythmic notions.
Ιf you teach to small children, you can take advantage of the structure of the song in order to practice the interval of the minor third (c- a) and learn new names or play with different words.
Sing the first part of the song (“A ram sam sam, a ram sam sam, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam”) all together.
At the last words of the first part (“ram sam sam”) point at a child, and then replace the text of the second part (“a rafiq, a rafiq”) with his/her name.
If the name is e.x. “James”, song changes as follows:
“A ram sam sam, a ram sam sam, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam
James, James, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam”
Ιnstead of names you can show objects of the class, or mimic activities.
Sing “table”, “window”, “pencil”, or music instruments as “tambourine”, “triangle”, etc. In the latter case the child who is holding the corresponding instrument can play while the others are singing.
If you want to sing activities as “I’m running”, “I’m eating”, “I’m sleeping”, etc., mimic the movement at the last “ram sam sam” and replace the text with the verb:
“A ram sam sam, a ram sam sam, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam
I’m flying”, I’m flying, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam”
Round: “A Ram Sam Sam” can be sung by older children as a two-voice round. The second voice starts singing at the second part of the song, last beat of measure 9.
