The Wheels on the Bus

Children’s song, U.K.

“The Wheels on the Bus” is one of the most popular songs for children in U.K. It is a “repetitive song” as it is cyclically-structured, so that it’s easy for children to learn and participate.

The melody is actually based on “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” a popular circle-dance song.

Teaching idea & activities

Songs like “Wheel on the Bus” are suitable for learning the chords of terminant and dominant. Teach the basic hand’s position on the piano or the guitar and repeat the follow sequence: tonictonicdominanttonic.

It is not necessary to have a score, just sing along with the children and make a sign when the chord changes.

If you have a glockenspiel, play the root note and the fifth instead of the whole chord (e.x. F – C, C – G) and accompany the song.

Song Info

“The Wheels on the Bus” is a song known already in 1939 (published in the “American Childhood” magazine, vol. 25). It is a tune with repetitive parts where the text stays almost the same from verse to verse with only one or two words changing (see also “If you are happy and you know it” , “Finger Family“, “Baby Bumblebee”, “If You’re Happy and You Know It” , “Rain, rain, go away”, “Old MacDonald had a farm”).

The song is based on the traditional nursery rhyme “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” which shares the same melody.
