Part of the reasons why the guitar is so popular is that in less than a month you can accompany yourself as you sing your favorite songs! There are hundreds of great songs that are easy for guitar beginners to play, and these 3-chord songs are probably some of the ones you’re looking for.
In this article we have especially the younger fellows up to 12 years old in mind, who are only beginning their guitar-playing journey. We have therefore selected nursery rhymes and well-known kids’ songs with 3-chord progressions; that’s a great place to start with, for they already know the tunes and will be instantly interested and engaged in the process. Of course, if you’re a teacher or a parent you can play along with them.
The 3-chord progression is the foundation of the art of accompaniment, as it implements the main harmonic structure of the Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant (I – IV – V). At the same time, the 3 chords provide essential transition patterns for left hand practice. While at entry level, beginners should take their time practicing this basic 3-chord progression until they get deeper understanding of it. They should also practice until they’re able to switch between chords smoothly and fast.
All the songs here are in guitar-friendly keys, like C, G, E, A and D. In many cases we give you more than one key option to choose from. You will also find guitar sheet music for every song, as in many cases chord playing is followed by / taught in parallel with finger picking. You can use both to create an instant guitar duet, where the one plays the notes and the other the accompaniment; If you don’t go for any of these options, you can use the notes as lead sheet music for your singing.
