The melody of this carol is based on the Welsh carol “Nos Galan”. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used it in a piano and violin duet in the 1700’s.
Today children love to sing it, specially the “Fa la la…” part. Give the score to your Orff group of young students or to older ones in your percussion class and have some true Christmas music fun!

Arrangement Details
As you have already seen, here you’ll find a rather easy percussion arrangement and an easier Orff arrangement.
The first one is in C minor and the meter is in 4/4. It begins with some kind of “dialog” between the two groups of mallets (the glockenspiel with the xylophone on the one hand, and the vibraphone with the marimba on the other). That said, the xylophone takes the melody and the rest accompany.
So as to the Orff arrangement, it is adapted in F major. The alto metallophone and the soprano xylophone play the B♭ note, although there is a passage with B natural in meters 19-20. That means that you’ll need two-row instruments for those players.
